About Us
I’m Maria Roeder, the founder of M.A.R. Design. As an interior designer, I’ve always been fascinated by the way that unique pieces can transform a space and give it character. That’s why I started the Chattel project – to showcase one-of-a-kind, handcrafted pieces that will become cherished parts of your space.
What I love about the pieces in our collection is that they each have a story behind them. We work with Mexican artisans in Tlayacapan, who use eco-friendly materials to create pieces that reflect their individuality and craftsmanship. When you choose a piece from our collection, you become a part of that story – a custodian of the piece’s rich history and the artisan’s craft.
Authenticity and craftsmanship are at the heart of Chattel. We go to great lengths to preserve the integrity of each piece and honor the artisan’s work. It’s our way of ensuring that the pieces in our collection are truly unique and reflective of the artisan’s individuality.
But Chattel is more than just a collection of beautiful pieces – it’s also about giving back to our community. We donate 5% of our sales to two non-profit foundations, SEDAC in Mexico City and Sun.risas in Miami. It’s our way of supporting organizations that are doing good in the world and making a positive impact in our community.
Thank you for considering Chattel for your space. We hope that our collection inspires you to create a space that is truly unique and reflective of your personal style, while also supporting the work of talented artisans and non-profit organizations.

Partner organizations:
Servicio, Educación y Desarrollo a la Comunidad I.A.P. (“SEDAC”)
Country: Mexico
Founded in 1979, SEDAC is a non-profit organization in Mexico that focuses on providing pre-elementary and elementary school to a vulnerable community located in Ixtapaluca, State of Mexico. Our mission is to provide high quality education so that our graduates grow into impactful agents in their community becoming labor and social change catalyzers.
Given that our students are born and raised in homes under extreme poverty conditions (~3.5 dls of income a day), we have complemented our education program with a self-funded dining hall that provides breakfast and lunch for the students so that they are in appropriate physical conditions to take on the school work.
This pandemic has brought so much change in our lives that it has revealed the vulnerability, dangers and injustices that we had wrongfully normalized in our social contract.
Vulnerable children communities in Mexico were impacted the most. SEDAC youngsters (as many around the world) have fallen behind their lessons – and too often gone hungry. They have had to endure health risks, as their parents were cast adrift, forcing families to look for income in the streets and taking the disease to their households. The situation is a clear evidence that health suffering is skewed across social classes. Unfortunately, our children have also witnessed the increasing wave of violence at home.
